About Chamonix

Chamonix is the most renowned and famous town in the French Alps as its home to the largest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc, situated only 90 minutes from Geneva Airport. It sits at average 1000m attitude, with it’s highest point a staggering 3,842m altitude at the top of the Aiguille du Midi ski lift, with amazing views over Europe’s highest mountain – Mont Blanc, and the whole Chamonix Valley.

Chamonix has been a world-renowned ski resort ever since the Winter Olympics in 1924. This large ski valley caters for all levels of skiers. Les Houches and Le Tour are great for beginners and intermediates – whereas the resorts of Argentiere, Brevent and Flegere have slopes to test the most advanced skiers and snowboarders.

Chamonix is a historic alpine town brimming with restaurants, cafés, shops, stylish hotels and old-fashioned auberges. Besides skiing, Chamonix is one of the best places to visit in France for hiking, biking, rock climbing and paragliding during the summer months too.

TOP THINGS TO DO
IN CHAMONIX

Mont Blanc is the largest mountain range in Europe & its specular beauty is not short of anything but amazing. You can take the Aiguille du Midi cable car and ascend to over 3,842m in Altitude. Here you can take in spectacular views, watch the adventure alpinists explore the mountain range, keep an eye out for skiers and climbers all over this area and embark on the ski challenge of the Vallee Blanche.

Train du Montenvers Mer de Glace is another must do in Chamonix. This is where you enjoy a cog train ride up the side of the mountain to reach the Mer du Glace (Sea of Ice) this is the longest glacier in the French Alps, spanning over 12 kms.

Chamonix is not just home to adventure sports and activities, but the historical town centre is jam packed with tasty restaurants, filled with local savoyard tasty food, and plenty of Italian choices since its so close to Italy. Rose Point is the prettiest restaurant in Chamonix and it’s worth having a drink here even if you don’t stay for lunch or dinner. If you are looking for a real local restaurant then we would recommend Le Monchu Restaurant, being here from 1972 in the heart of Chamonix and decorated with vintage mountain gear, you get the real French Alps feel here. Some other options if you are seeking Italian food Chez Paolo has you covered, it’s like walking into little Italy. Not to be missed are the ‘famous’ large burgers at Poco Loco situated conveniently on the main high street ( Rue Dr Paccard). If you are staying a little bit outside of Chamonix Le Vert Lodge & Restaurant is a great budget location with asian inspired pub meals located by Lac Gaillands.

For Apres ski in Chamonix, it’s done a little differently to other resorts with most of the action occurring at the bottom of the slopes or in the town centre. La Folie Douce is located at the bottom of the Savoy piste, which has a great outdoor terrace and is equipped with stunning fire tables to keep you warm as you start to enjoy some afternoon drinks. Chambre Neuf is without question the most lively bar in Chamonix town for Apres, usually with a live band most afternoons. Dancing on the tables and jugs of beers flowing means you can enjoy until your heart’s content.

In the evening you won’t be short of places to enjoy the lively local nightlife such as Barup, The pub and Beckett and Wilde found in the lively Chamonix Sud square.

ALTERNATIVES TO TRANSFERS

The other option holidaymakers have when travelling from Geneva to Chamonix is by car and train.

If you travel by train you will need to travel to Annemasse, then change at St Gervais Gare Routiere & then continue up to Chamonix. For this it will take roughly 3 hours from leaving Geneva Airport.

If you travel via car hire you will need to locate your destination and ensure that you know how to fit the safety requirements such as chains. When you arrive at the resort by car you will need to locate parking as not all properties have parking available, so make sure you do your research on where you will park as Chamonix has very limited parking.

After a long flight, you may prefer the ease and convenience of a shared or private transfer that takes all of the organisation out of your hands.

SKIING IN CHAMONIX

Chamonix is known for an endless amount of off pistes, glacier skiing and steep area skiing. Chamonix is one of those resorts which due to the span of the mountain are not always connected. The main ski areas are Grand Montets, Le Tours, Brevent, Flerge, Les Houches.

In Chamonix for Beginners we have two nursery slopes –  Les Planards and Le Savoy. If you are a complete beginner, start here. Lot of ski schools are also located here and great access for families with children to start their ski skills.

Les Houches is a great place for beginners and also has lovely rolling slopes in which you can also ski to parts of St Gervais.

Flegere & Brevents are a well connected area of the resort in which you can enjoy the mountain valley views here and then also look over at Mont Blanc as you ski the area here. There are a variety of green & blue runs and even a few snow parks.

Le Tour is further from the Centre of Chamonix however it is known as one of the sunny spots of the valley where there is a great choice of skiing for both beginners and advanced.  You can even ski over to Vallorcine and over the swiss border. Le Tour recently opened a new cable car making it even more popular this winter season.

Grand Montets in Argentiere is not for the faint hearted, which is filled with a lot of red and blacks pistes. There is also a lot of off- piste and glacier skiing in Grand Montets making it a mecca for the advanced skier and boarder. On a powder day, this is the best place to go but it also means there can be crowds, so get up early!
